WEST POINT, N.Y. - Freshman Alyssa Gestl tied for medalist honors with junior Richard Calvin in air rifle, and junior Michael Matthews was the high scorer in smallbore as Army swept USP and SUNY-Maritime in its NCAA Qualifier Saturday at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.

The sixth-ranked Black Knights (10-3, 4-2 GARC) turned in a solid performance in their bid to qualify for the NCAA Championships for the 10th straight year. Army's 4666 aggregate is its second highest score as the Black Knights put the finishing touches on the regular-season outpointing USP (4309) and SUNY-Maritime (4131) in posting their highest victory total since 2007-08 in sending William Mengon and Chris Malachosky out on a winning note on Senior Day.

Gestl tied her career high posting a 589 in air rifle sharing first-place honors with Calvin in leading an Army sweep of the top nine places. Matthews (588) and junior Joseph Todaro (586) rounded out Army's four-man unit that combined for a 2352 total, just five shy of the school mark the team tied a few weeks ago. Junior Zachary Wells also contributed a 588 to share third place with Matthews shooting individually.

Matthews' 585 mark in smallbore nipped Todaro by two points for medalist honors in Army's sweep of the top seven places in that discipline. Senior William Mengon and (575) and Gestl (571) rounded out the Black Knights unit that posted a 2314 in outpointing the field. Junior Jacob Costa finished among the leaders firing a 577 to earn the bronze shooting individually.

The Black Knights return to action next weekend when they participate at the Great America Rifle Conference Championships being hosted by Ole Miss. Army closed out the regular-season in third place, trailing champion Kentucky and runner-up West Virginia.
