Army juniors Richard Calvin and Jacob Costa posted the Black Knights' top marks in air rifle and smallbore, respectively, Friday afternoon at the NRA Sectionals hosted by the University of the Sciences at the Colonel William Shea Rifle Range in Philadelphia.
In the tournament format setting, Army fired a 2342 mark in air rifle and a 2286 smallbore score combining for a 4628 composite. Army's mark in smallbore tied its third highest of the season.
Calvin posted a team-high 591 in air rifle with Costa firing the top score and a career best 581 in smallbore. Senior Chris Malachosky finished among the leaders in both events, placing second in smallbore (574) and third in air rifle (585) competing individually. He set a season high in smallbore and was just three points shy of his personal best in air rifle.
Joining Costa on Army's four-man smallbore unit were juniors Michael Matthews (573) and Joseph Todaro (567), along with freshman Alyssa Gestl (566). Gestl turned in Army's second highest score in air rifle registering a 587, which is just two shy of her personal best, and was followed by Matthews and Todaro with 582s in rounding out the Black Knights' firing unit.
The No. 5 ranked Black Knights return home to host No. 6 Jacksonville State and No. 11 Ole Miss Sunday at 9 a.m. at Tronsrue Marksmanship Center.
Army (5-2) is in the midst of a three-match win streak and will look to extend upon that mark. Jacksonville State is a member of the Ohio Valley Conference, while the Black Knights and Ole Miss are members of the Great America Rifle Conference. Army is 2-2 in the GARC and Ole Miss has a pair of wins as well.

QUICK HITS: It is the second consecutive meet that Jacob Costa set a career high in smallbore, nipping his mark of 580 set in a home match last week against Ohio State ... it is the fourth time this season that Richard Calvin scored in the 590 range in air rifle... the Black Knights shot on paper targets at the Colonel William Shea Range, which are more difficult than electronic targets ...
