Softball Drops Contests in Day One of UNF Invitational

Jacksonville, Fla. – The Army West Point softball team 6-14, 0-0 PL) faced off against the University of North Florida (11-6, 0-0 ASUN) in Game 1 of the UNF Invitational. The Ospreys took Game 1, defeating the Black Knights 5-1. In Game 2, Army fell to the Troy University Trojans (16-7, 0-0, Sun Belt) 7-1. The Black Knights had three Cadet-athletes earn a hit against the Trojans.
How it Happened
Game 1 (North Florida wins 5-1)
Ospreys' starter Ashley Connor (3-3) got the win, pitching a complete game. Connor worked 7.0 innings, allowing five hits, one run, while striking out ten, and walked one.
In the top of the first inning, Army threatened, with Bebek hitting a double to left field, putting a runner in scoring position. North Florida struck first in the bottom of the first, with Shannon Glover reaching on a fielder's choice, sending Kayla Harper in to score, giving the Osprey's a 1-0 lead.
After a scoreless second inning, the Ospreys put a runner in scoring position with Logan Jackson hitting a double to right field. Army got out of the inning with Glover grounding out to first base.
The Black Knights bats came alive in the top of the sixth with Angelina Bebek hitting a leadoff single. Army tied the ballgame up with Kayla Edwards ripping a double to center field, sending Bebek in to score, making it a 1-1 game.
The University of North Florida attacked Army starter Olivia Farris (2-7) in the bottom of the sixth, with a runner on first, Chloe Culp hit a triple down the right field line, giving the Ospreys back the lead.
North Florida added three more runs in the inning,.
Starter Olivia Farris went 5.0 innings, allowing six hits, four runs, two earned runs, and struck out two.
Breanna Izzo worked 1.0 innings, having allowed two hits, one run, and had no strikeouts or walks.
Game 2 (Troy wins 7-1)
Troy's starting pitcher Leanna Johnson (12-2) got the win, working 4.0 innings, allowing two hits, one run, struck out one, and walked two.
The Trojans struck first to get on the board, with D'Aun scoring off of a sacrifice fly by Libby Baker, making it a 1-0 game. Troy extended its lead with Taylor McKinney scoring off an error by Taylor Brown.
The Black Knights kept Troy to a two-run lead through two innings.
In the bottom of the third inning, Army had a runner on base first when Kayla Edwards hit a double sending Angelina Bebek across the plate, making it a one run game.
The Trojans attacked the Black Knights pitching rotation, piling on five runs in the top of the fourth, extending their lead to 7-1.
Army threatened in the bottom of the fifth with Ellie Caldwell ripping a leadoff double, putting a runner in scoring position. Troy got out of the inning with a strikeout, a fly out, and a pop up to second.
With two outs in the top of the seventh inning, Troy threatened to further extend its lead putting a runner in scoring position. Army got out of the inning with a flyout.
Alicyn Grete went 4.0 innings, having no hits or runs, while struck out one, and walking three.
Troy's Haley Pittman worked 3.0 innings, allowing one hit, striking out three, and had no walks.
Next Up
The Black Knights will return to the diamond for Day two of the UNF Invitational, where they will face Troy and UNF on Saturday, March 11 at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m.
