Rashenskas’ Record Day Lifts Army Over Siena
May 04, 2017 | Softball
LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – Senior co-captain Alee Rashenskas of the Army West Point softball team broke the program's all-time walks record as the Black Knights closed out the 2017 regular season with a doubleheader sweep at Siena, 11-1 in five innings and 8-0 in six innings, Thursday afternoon.
The Black Knights improved to 35-19 on the season, while the Saints dropped to 20-27 overall.
Raskenskas began the second game with a walk to tie former teammate Kasey McCravey's mark of 81 before breaking the record in the third.
It did not take Army long to jump out in front as leadoff hitter Alee Rashenskas scored the game's first run after reaching on a two-base error. She was driven in by designated player Ashley Yoo to give the Black Knights the early 1-0 edge.
Caroline Smith was cruising in the circle, retiring the first eight batters she faced in the opener. She would receive some insurance runs in the third and fourth innings as the Black Knights burst open with consecutive five-run innings.
The third frame started with back-to-back hits by Izzy Gates and Emily Gray before Rashenskas loaded the bases by reaching on an error. Rookie Lacey Swafford laced a ball up the middle for a single that glanced off the pitcher's glove, scoring two Cadets on the play. A double-steal plated the Black Knights' second baseman, which was followed by a Katie Ontiveros sacrifice fly. The offensive production continued with three consecutive singles by Kennedy Harrison, Sam Hartman and Amelia Trotter, who drove in the final run of the inning.
The following inning started out a lot different as Siena retired the first two Army batters. The Black Knights showed their resiliency after that, however, as they strung together five consecutive hits that was capped with a two-run homer by Hartman. Other big hits in the inning included a two RBI double by Ontiveros and an RBI single by Harrison.
That gave Smith all the assistance she would need as the Chino Hills, Calif., native cruised from there on out to her 50th career win.
The Black Knights put themselves in front early in the nightcap as well, putting up two runs before the Saints took their turn at the dish. Walks by Rashenskas and Ontiveros sandwiched around a Yoo single loaded the bases for Trotter, who slapped a single to center that scored two runs.
That offensive output would continue for the majority of Army's regular season finale as it scored runs in five of the game's six innings. A double down the line in left field by Rashenskas scored Gray in the second before she scored Esparza-Gallegos on a bases-loaded walk to make the score 4-0 the following stanza.
Mae Wadyka entered the game in the fifth inning as a pinch runner after Esparza-Gallegos led off with an infield single and scored on a groundout to the pitcher. Later that inning, Swafford traded places with Maddie Kim with an RBI double after Kim legged out an extra-base hit two batters earlier. The Black Knights earned their final two runs in the sixth inning when Esparza-Gallegos singled in Trotter and scored on Kim's second hit of the afternoon.
Kristen West threw a gem in the circle, giving up just one hit in her six innings of work. She faced two batters over the minimum, both of whom reached base in the fourth inning. The Houston, Texas, native struck out two in her final regular season appearance, while recording a 1-2-3 inning in the first, second, third, fifth and sixth innings.
