Army, Navy Split on Opening Day of Series
April 22, 2017 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y.  – The Army West Point baseball team split a doubleheader with rival Navy here Saturday afternoon behind an enthusiastic crowd.
Â
The Black Knights dropped the opener 7-3 before rebounding for an impressive 9-2 victory in the nightcap. With the win in the second game, Army snapped Navy's 13-game winning streak.
Â
In Game 2, Tyler Giovinco struggled during the first half inning, allowing two runs on three hits. The sophomore rebounded nicely though not giving up another hit until a two-out double in the top of the sixth. During that stretch the Las Vegas, Nev., native retired 11 Mids down in order.
Â
The Black Knights backed the lefty with some big bats as well. Army tied the game up in the second inning when Trey Martin launched a shot over the left field fence. His blast brought home Dickerson, who had registered a one-out double during the previous at bat.
Â
One inning later, John McCarthy drilled a two-out double to left center to score Jon Rosoff from second, handing Army its first lead in the series at 3-2. Then in the bottom of the fifth inning, Kris Lindner blasted a home run to right field to increase the Cadet's lead to 5-2. Rosoff scored his second run in the game during that play.
Â
The Black Knights added three more runs in the sixth and one additional run in the eighth to ultimately put the game out of reach.
Â
In the opener, the Mids broke a scoreless deadlock in the third inning when they jumped in front 2-0. Army cut that lead in half in the fourth when Matt Hudgins converted on a sacrifice fly to score Lindner. But the visitors would again extend their advantage with two more runs in the top of the fifth to create a 4-1 gap between the teams. The Cadets would not go away though posting two runs of their own in the bottom half to make it a one-run ballgame again.
Â
Unfortunately, three runs for Navy over the course of the next two innings handed the Mids the win.
Â
On the day, Rosoff batted a team-best .571 after finishing 4-for-7 with two runs and three RBI. Josh White and McCarthy added three hits each with White notching three RBI and McCarthy one.
Â
Giovinco got the win in the nightcap after allowing six hits and just two runs in his career-high 7.1 innings. The sophomore also fanned a season-best five batters during his time on the hill. Blake Walters came in to finish out the final 1.2 innings, giving up only one hit and one walk.
Â
Jacob Carte was tabbed with the loss in Game 1. The Charlotte, N.C., native allowed five hits and two runs in his 3.2 innings of work.
