Six-Run Inning Lifts Baseball Over Marist in HVBC
April 27, 2016 | Baseball
FISHKILL, N.Y. – A six-run sixth inning powered the Army West Point baseball team to an 8-3 victory over Marist in the 11th annual Hudson Valley Baseball Classic from Dutchess Stadium on Wednesday night.
With the win, the Black Knights (15-28) take a 6-5 advantage in the series.
"There was another great atmosphere here tonight," said head coach Matt Reid. "Army, Marist and the Renegades put together a great event with the fireworks and the clinic in addition to the game. It's a great event for the Hudson Valley."
Army starter Patrick Gardner cruised through the first two innings, retiring the first six batters he faced. The senior southpaw ran into some trouble in the third inning, however, allowing a two-run single to Graham McIntire to open the scoring. The Red Foxes added an insurance run in the fifth on a triple by Tyler Kirkpatrick to take a 3-0 lead.
The Black Knights recorded four hits through the first five innings before exploding for six runs in the sixth inning to rally back and take a 6-3 lead. John McCarthy opened the scoring with a single that plated David Monge, who led off the inning with a base hit. Monge advanced to second on a walk by Jon Rosoff and then they shifted to second and third on a wild pitch, before scoring on McCarthy's single.
Jacob Page joined the hit parade after McCarthy's base hit with a single that scored Rosoff to cut the lead to 3-2. After a pop out, Josh White drove in McCarthy for the game-tying run with one out. Ryan Levenhagen legged out an infield single in the following at bat to plate Page to give Army its first lead of the game at 4-3. Following a Trey Martin walk, Kris Lindner connected on a two-run double down the right field line to cap the scoring in the inning by bringing in Levenhagen and White and Army lead 6-3.
"We had some good, patient approaches that inning," Reid commented. "McCarthy and Page stayed through the ball, we were able to work a couple walks and we were able to put the barrel on it. It was good that everybody did that together."
The score stayed the same until the top of the ninth inning when Page stepped into the box and blasted a two-run homer over the left field fence to give Army a commanding 8-3 lead. McCarthy crossed the plate on the round-tripper after being hit by a pitch.
"Insurance runs are always good," remarked Page. "The approach doesn't really change. What we're looking for from that type of pitcher was something up in the zone, and I was able to capitalize on my opportunity."
Justin French came into the game in the inning before, when it was three-run game and earned the save with a perfect ninth inning and Army won the Hudson Valley Baseball Classic.
"Hopefully, this will spring-board us into the weekend against a very good Lehigh team," said Reid. "We've definitely picked up some momentum against a talented Marist team tonight, but that doesn't mean anything if we can't carry it through the weekend."
The Black Knights return to action this weekend as they host Lehigh in the final Patriot League series of the season.
