Explosive First Inning Not Enough for Softball

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After an explosive, eight run first inning, the Army West Point softball team could not hold onto the lead as the Red Foxes snuck past the Black Knights to defeat them 9-8 Tuesday night at the Softball Complex.

The first game was delayed an hour due to weather and resulting field conditions. Game two was eventually called after a marathon first game pushed the potential start time past 8:30 p.m.

Trailing 3-0 heading into the bottom of the first inning, the Black Knights (30-17) stormed back in the home half with eight runs with McPeek (2-for-4 and four RBI) blasting a grand slam as Army batted around to pull ahead 8- 3.

Kasey McCravey, collecting a pair of hits in that inning, scored and drove in a run with Alee Rashenskas knocking in a pair of runs with a single after drawing a walk and scoring on McPeek's home in her first at bat.

Marist (37-8) rallied with six runs in the third inning on seven hits to pull ahead 9-8 with relief pitcher J. Oberdorf keeping the Black Knights off the scoreboard despite being touched for eight hits and a pair of walks.

She stranded seven runners in denying Army during the 6.1 innings she pitched along with helping her own cause driving in a pair of runs and scoring once. G. Kelleher went 2-for-4 with two RBI for the visitors who collected 13 hits off two Black Knight pitchers.

Army will be on the road Thursday for a make-up rubber game at Colgate with the first pitch scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
