WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's tennis team snapped a four-match losing streak on Sunday by defeating Stony Brook 4-3 and Siena 4-0. The Black Knights get back over .500 and are 7-6 this season, the Seawolves are 2-2, and this was the first match of the year for the Saints.
Sophomore Michael Sienko provided the Black Knights with the deciding victory in the early match versus Stony Brook. He lost the first set 2-6 and was then trailing 5-2 in the second frame. Sienko battled back for a 7-6 victory before fighting for a 7-5 win in the final set. The Williamston, Mich., native moves to 3-4 on the spring in singles matches. Sienko also paired with sophomore Michael Nguyen for a win in the third doubles flight by a score of 6-1.
Army's four wins in the afternoon match came easier as they did not drop a set among the 11 that were completed. Senior Ben Davies, sophomore Gregory Shannon, and senior Sam Jang-Milsten all earned their first singles wins of the 2016 portion of the schedule while senior David Proctor and junior Cameron Voigt tacked on their first doubles win of the season with a 6-2 win together in the number three doubles.
The Cadets get back on the road next week as they will begin their spring trip in Florida. There they will face off against Cleveland State and fellow service academy Air Force in Orlando, Fla., before taking on Rollins in Winter Park, Fla., the last match being a home affair for the Tars.
