Softball Shuts Down George Mason
March 05, 2016 | Softball
FAIRFAX, Va. – The Army West Point softball team was able to overcome a late rally by George Mason Saturday afternoon to defeat the Patriots 4-3 for the Black Knights' second win of the day at the Patriot Classic.
Â
For the second game in a row, the Cadets (6-7) were able to score in the first inning. Mae Wadyka made it to first on a single and then stole second base. In the next play, Kasey McCravey advanced to first on an error which also sent Wadyka to third base. Kristen McPeek lined out into a double play, but Wadyka was able to cross the plate to give Army a 1-0 advantage.
Â
Both teams would prevent the other from scoring, or even allowing anyone to pass second base for the next three and a half innings. At the top of the fifth however, Army increased its lead to two.
Â
Ashley Yoo reached second on a double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. Taylor Gaff was grounded out to the short stop, but notched an RBI as Yoo scored to put the Black Knights up 2-0.
Â
George Mason (3-4) had a successful fifth inning as the Patriots were able to tally three runs to take a 3-2 lead fueled by Seymour's two-run triple.
Â
Neither team was able to put together a run in the sixth inning, but a two-run seventh clinched the victory for Army. Yoo and Gladys Esparza-Gallegos were both walked with one out. Carrie Reilly subbed in as a pinch hitter for Gaff and was able to hit a ball straight towards first base. This advanced Yoo and Esparza-Gallegos into scoring position with one out remaining.
Â
Hailey Megge became the pinch runner for Esparza-Gallegos and Kennedy Harrison came in as a pinch hitter. Harrison stroked a two-run single that would essentially push Army to win 4-3.
Â
Up by one with the Patriots up for their last at-bat, Renee Poirier stepped into the circle for the save and tallied two-straight strikeouts. She then closed the game for the Black Knights with a groundout to first.
Â
George Mason held a 7-4 advantage over the Cadets in hits, but had one error to Army's zero. Kristen West earned the win from the circle for Army to improve her record on the year to 4-1. Harrison finished the day with two RBI, while Gaff recorded one. Wadyka, McPeek, Yoo and Harrison each had a hit in today's victory. Sam Hartman led the team in putouts from the catcher's position with six.
Â
Army returns to action Sunday for games against Marist (9 a.m.) and another versus George Mason (11:30 a.m.).
