Siena Outlasts Baseball in Extra Innings
March 29, 2016 | Baseball
The loss drops Army to 9-14 on the year, while Siena moved to 5-15 overall.
Alex Dickerson went 4-for-4 with two RBI, including a double and triple, and John McCarthy was 3-for-5 at the plate. Jon Rosoff and Josh White each added two hits apiece for the Black Knights.
Army used eight different pitchers in the game, and received two shutout innings from starter Daniel Burggraaf. Jacob Carte tossed a scoreless fourth inning and Jon Rosoff threw 1.1 innings without giving up a run.
"We had a lot of hits today," head coach Matt Reid said. "A lot of different guys played and pitched in the game and there were a lot of moving parts. I was proud of the effort and then it got away from us late. We have got to be able to finish games out and it takes everyone to get the job done. We all have to do this together."
Siena's designated hitter Joe Drpich drove in four runs and registered five hits and a walk in seven plate appearances to lead the Saints offensively. Left-fielder Matt Hamel recorded three hits and scored twice and leadoff man Dan Swain added two hits and two RBI.
The visitors took their first lead with two runs in the top of the sixth inning, but the advantage was short-lived as Army answered in the home half with three runs to go in front 5-4. Dickerson's RBI single with two runners in scoring position brought home the first run before Jacob Page's fielder's choice RBI tied the game at 4-4. Kris Lindner followed and ripped a single to left as Army edged in front.
The lead held through the eighth inning as Justin French entered from the Army bullpen with one down in the inning and a man on third. French struck out the next two batters he faced to close out the eighth.
The Saints refused to go away and sent the game to extra innings by tying it in the ninth when pinch hitter Dan Lowndes ripped a two-out RBI double to the wall in center. Army was unable to score in the ninth and Siena plated eight runs off Army reliever Sam Messina.
Messina took the loss (0-1) after allowing three earned runs on one hit with three walks and four hit batsmen.
The Black Knights open conference play on Saturday afternoon when they host Lafayette. First pitch of the doubleheader from Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field is 1 p.m.
