March 26, 2016 | Baseball
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Army West Point baseball team jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Seton Hall and split the twinbill with a 8-2 victory over the Pirates.
The victory ended a three-game losing skid for Army (9-13) and also snapped Seton Hall's 12-game winning streak.
"I thought our guys showed some urgency in game two today in getting us an early lead," head coach Matt Reid said. "Our pitching staff competed in the zone and good things happened for us as a result. We were proud of the execution and effort in game two."
Stu Schley went 2-for-4 and drove in three runs to lead the Black Knights' offensive effort. Kris Lindner and Keegan Vega each contributed two hits and Josh White, John McCarthy and Jacob Page recorded one apiece.
Army struck first in the top of the first inning against Seton Hall starting pitcher Chris Morris, who failed to record an out. Lindner led off the game with a walk and White tripled him home for the first run. McCarthy followed with an RBI single back up the middle to bring White in from third, before Schley doubled inside the right field line to put runners on second and third. A wild pitch increased Army's lead to 3-0 and Morris hit Trey Martin with a pitch to end Morris' outing.
Vega greeted Seton Hall relief pitcher Tim Edwards with a RBI single through the hole on the right side and Dickerson's fielder's choice pushed Army's advantage to 5-0.
Army starter Tyler Giovinco made his first-career start and limited Seton Hall's offense to two runs on three hits over 5.0 innings of work. The freshman picked up the win after striking out three and walking three as Army maintained its five-run lead (7-2) through five innings.
The visiting Black Knights added a run in the sixth when Schley worked a bases-loaded walk to increase Army's lead to 8-2.
Senior Patrick Gardner came in for Giovinco and held Seton Hall scoreless over his 2.2 innings on the hill and worked around five hits and two walks. Classmate Justin French got the final out of the eighth and struck out the side in the ninth, including leaving the bases loaded to end the game.
The Black Knights return home on Tuesday for a matchup against Siena. First pitch from Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field is 3 p.m.
