Baseball Drops Series Opener to Seton Hall
March 25, 2016 | Baseball
The Pirates extended their winning streak to 11 games and improved to 15-6 on the season, while Army fell to 8-12.
Kris Lindner and Jon Rosoff each registered two base hits, with Lindner driving home two runs, while Stu Schley, Alex Dickerson and Justin Reece each hit safely for Army.
Seton Hall was led offensively by Derek Jenkins, who went 3-for-6 with two RBI and three stolen bases. Joe Poduslenko, Mike Alescio, Chris Chiaradio and Brett Fontenelli each had multi-hit games for the Pirates, who totaled 13 base hits on the afternoon.
Right-hander Shane McCarthy (3-2) pitched 6.0 innings for Seton Hall and earned the win after allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits with three strikeouts and a walk. He was relieved by Matt Ardente, who tossed a scoreless seventh and eighth, before handing over to Matt Leon in the ninth. Leon struck out two and retired the side in order to finish the game.
"We have to improve our defense," head coach Matt Reid said following the game. "We made some crucial mistakes and we need to be able to pick each other up. We are looking forward to going back out there tomorrow and playing two more games against Seton Hall."
The Pirates scored first with single runs in the second and third innings against Army starter Jeremy Mortensen. The Black Knights' lefty ran into trouble in both frames, but limited the damage by leaving the bases loaded in the second and stranding two more runners in the third.
Army came back in the bottom of the fourth and took advantage of two Seton Hall miscues to tie the game at 2-2. Schley delivered an RBI double to open the scoring before an error tied the score later in the frame.
Mortensen exited after four and was replaced by Jacob Carte, who took the loss after allowing Seton Hall to take the lead for good with two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Trailing 5-3 heading into the bottom of the seventh, Army pushed across one run after Dickerson began the inning with a double to the gap in right center. Two batters later, Lindner went the opposite way on a single inside the left-field line to narrow the Seton Hall lead to one.
The Pirates responded by scoring twice in each of the final two innings. Schley pitched a scoreless seventh inning after moving over from first base and returned to the mound in the eighth, but two unearned runs proved to be enough insurance for Seton Hall as they took a 7-4 lead.
Freshman Mike Gagliardi allowed two runs on three hits in the ninth as Seton Hall ran the final total to 9-4.
The series resumes on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m. when the Black Knights and Pirates play a doubleheader in South Orange, N.J.
Game Notes: Army wore its white uniform tops with white pants and black caps.
