Army Falls Short to No. 24 Spartans

CLEARWATER, Fla. – The Army West Point softball team suffered a 3-2 setback to No. 24 USC Upstate Sunday morning at the Eddie C. Moore Softball Complex. The Spartans had a walkoff hit in the bottom of the seventh to clinch the game over the Black Knights.

The Spartans (23-3) were on the board first with one run off an Army (10-10) error at the bottom of the second. In the top of the third, Ashley Yoo had a single to left field to make it on base. A sacrifice bunt by Nena Riccoboni advanced Yoo to second and put the Black Knights in scoring position.

Maddie Kim had the next at-bat and slammed a homerun over the left field fence forcing the Cadets to a 2-1 lead.

The Black Knights and Spartans were not able to convert any runs in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the home half of the fifth inning, USC Upstate had a girl on second with one out. The Spartans hit a sacrifice bunt that Kasey McCravey was able to quickly reach and get the groundout at first. The Spartans' runner was able to advance to third, but in the next play Mae Wadyka ran down a fouled fly ball to the left fence to get Army out of the inning and maintain the 2-1 lead.

USC Upstate was able to score a run in the bottom half of the sixth inning fueled by a Spartan double to the center field fence.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Spartans stroked a walkoff hit to left field to clinch the game 3-2.

Kim had two RBI on the day off her homerun, and Rashenskas , Kim and Riccoboni each recorded hits. Renee Poirier had five strikeouts for the Black Knights and only one walk.

The Black Knights will play their final game in Florida against UMass Lowell on Wednesday, March 16. The game is set to begin at 2 p.m.
