Softball Stuns North Dakota in Five

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Allowing only two runs, the Army West Point softball team defeated North Dakota, 8-0, Saturday afternoon in five innings. The Black Knights totaled 10 hits and had zero errors in the victory, and never allowed the Fighting Hawks into scoring position in the game.

Still scoreless in the home half of the second inning, the Black Knights (10-9) exploded with six runs of five hits to jump out to a 6-0 lead.

Ashley Yoo was on base first as she singled to the short stop. Nena Riccoboni singled to right field pushing Yoo to second. The Cadets loaded up the bases when Mae Wadyka was walked. Army scored its first run off a Fighting Hawks (5-16) wild pitch which brought Yoo home and pushed Riccoboni and Wadyka into scoring position at second and third.

Kasey McCravey had an RBI single to the short stop before Wadyka stole home to push Army ahead 3-0. Emily Gray then stepped up to the plate and hate an RBI single up the middle which allowed McCravey to score.

Gladys Esparza-Gallegos was walked before Alee Rashenskas knocked a triple deep into center field sending home Gray and Esparza-Gallegos.

It was three up, three down for both teams in the third inning to keep the score at 6-0. In the bottom of the fourth, McCravey reached first on a single to left field. She then advanced to second on a wild pitch to put Army into scoring position yet again.

Gray made it to first off an error by the shortstop that also allowed McCravey to score. Esparza-Gallegos made it on base from another walk and was sent home when Yoo singled to the short stop for an RBI that extended the Black Knights' lead to 8-0.

North Dakota had a hit in the top of the fifth, but three quick outs by Army closed-out the game by mercy rule.

Kristen West picked up her seventh win in the circle to improve her record to 7-1 and allowed just two hits in the contest. Gray and Rashenskas led the team with two RBI apiece, while McCravey and Yoo each recorded one. Yoo, Rashenskas, Gray and McCravey all totaled two hits in the contest and Wadyka and Riccoboni tallied one each.

Army will be back at the Eddie C. Moore complex tomorrow morning for a 9 a.m. game against USC Upstate.

USC UPSTATE – The Spartans boast a 17-2 record this season and have won by mercy rule in six contests. USC Upstate's only losses have come from Kent State and Virginia Tech. Army's game against the Spartans will be the first meeting between the two schools.

UMASS LOWELL – The River Hawks have a record of 3-8 this season and have wins over Manhattan, South Carolina State and Campbell. UMass Lowell leads Army 2-0 in the all-time series. The two teams faced each other in 2015 at the USF Under Armour Classic where the River Hawks squeaked by with an 8-7 victory. The Cadets and UMass Lowell had also met earlier in the season at the Charleston Classic and the River Hawks came away with the 13-8 win.Â
