March 10, 2016 | Men's Basketball
WEST POINT, N.Y. - For the first time since 1978, the Army West Point men's basketball team will play in the postseason after accepting an invitation to play in the 2016 CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament.
"This is a special day for our program," head coach Zach Spiker said. "What this group has been able to accomplish this year and over the past four years validates the hard work our players, coaches and staff have put in to making our program successful. This is not the end result we want and, like everyone, we are working toward an NCAA berth. This is a significant moment and a very important rung on our program's ladder."
This year's CIT features a 32-team field with all 31 games being played on the home court of the higher seed. The first round of the CIT will take place March 14th-16th followed by the second round March 18th-20th with the Quarterfinals March 22nd-24th. The Semifinals on March 27th will broadcast on CBS Sports Network along with the Championship Game on March 29th. Additionally, all games will be streamed lived on SIDEARM Sports which is the #1 provider of college athletics.
The Black Knights will find out their opponent on Selection Sunday, March 13.
The 2015-16 Black Knights received an invitation to the CIT in a private team gathering with family and friends of the program inside the Army basketball team room. Chairman of the CIT Selection Committee, Jamie Kachmarik, extended the invitation to the team, which was met with applause from everyone present.
In addition to the team and coaching staff, former players and Army Sports Hall of Famers Dr. Jim Oxley '70, Bill Schutsky '68 and trainer Jimmy Wallace, as well as Pat Harris '79 were on hand for the announcement. Schutsky was assistant coach under Mike Krzyzewski on Army's 1978 team, Harris was a player and Wallace was the team trainer for the last team to play in the postseason, which advanced to the National Invitation Tournament. Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan echoed Spiker's comments of how proud he was of the team for its achievements this season.
Army, with its 19-13 record, has a chance to become the fifth team in the 113-year history of the program to win 20 games in a season. Its 19 victories mark the most for an Army team since the 1978 NIT squad and the Black Knights went 11-5 on the road to set the program mark for road wins in a season. The Class of 2016's 65 career wins are the most for a class since 1971.
Individually, senior Kyle Wilson (1,994 points) is close to becoming the fourth player in academy history to score 2,000 career points. Classmates Tanner Plomb, Kevin Ferguson and Dylan Cox are all 1,000-point scorers, as well, which is the first time in Patriot League history four classmates reached the career milestone.
