Women’s Tennis Suffers First Spring Loss to UConn

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season on Sunday afternoon, falling 6-1 to Connecticut at the Lichtenberg Center. The loss drops the Black Knights to 3-1 this season while UConn advances to 2-0.
The Cadets and Huskies had two marathon battles in the first and fifth singles matches. Rugile Valuniate and Srna Stosljevic battled deep into a third set with Stosljevic edging Valuniate 6-1, 4-6, 10-8. Bridget Guenard and Zaina Zaki would not be outdone, as the Black Knights sophomore won 6-3, 1-6, 14-12. Guenard has gone to a third set in each of her last two singles matches. Her victory was Army's lone victory in singles play.
UConn won the doubles point but Gabriella Spindler and Nancy Porter earned a victory in the number two doubles slot. The combination of Spindler and Porter have won back-to-back matches by a total of 12-2 while Porter improves to 4-0 on the season in doubles.
Army returns to action at home next week for three matches. The first will be against St. Bonaventure on Friday, Feb. 12, before hosting UMass and Vassar on Saturday, Feb. 13.
