Women’s Tennis Tops Hartford, Falls to Rutgers

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Saturday's doubleheader at the Lichtenberg Center ended with one win and one loss for the Army West Point women's tennis team. The Black Knights defeated Hartford 7-0 before losing to Rutgers 5-2. Their record is 7-3 this season while the Hawks are 0-2 and Scarlet Knights rise to 3-2.
The Black Knights and Hawks closest affair came in the top singles match. Freshman Genevieve McCormick defeated Skyler Schaar 6-3, 6-4, closing the match with a break point. It McCormick's third straight singles win as she improves to 5-3 this season.
Senior Haley O'Connor competed in singles for the first time this spring, topping Emily Lindsley of Hartford in the fifth singles spot 6-2, 6-1. In all, Army did not lose a single set in the morning match.
Army battled valiantly against Rutgers. The Cadets opened the match by winning the doubles point. The combination of senior Carolyn Pitman and freshman Kirby Einck moved to 5-0 in doubles, winning in the second doubles slot in a tasking match by a score 7-6 (13-11). Senior Eva Sung and freshman Rugile Valuniate paired in the top singles matchup for a 6-4 victory.
Einck was the only Black Knight to win a singles match. The Geneva, Ill., native won her third consecutive singles match in yet another exhausting effort, topping Lindsey Kayati in the fifth singles spot 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (7-3).
Army, now over halfway through its homestand to open the season, will host another trio of opponents next weekend when they welcome nearby Marist on Friday Feb. 26, and then host Fordham and NJIT on Saturday, Feb. 27.
