Softball Shuts Down UNC Wilmington
February 14, 2016 | Softball
WILMINGTON, N.C. – In the final game of the Seahawk Softball Bash, the Army West Point softball team shut down UNC Wilmington to earn its first win of the 2016 season. The Black Knights tallied 10 hits in today's 3-1 victory and tallied zero errors.
Â
"I was really proud of how the team responded to the past two days," said head coach Michelle DePolo. "Our offense continued to put runners on base and push done runs across, but the story of the day was exceptional defense. The success of this team in the long run is predicated on solid defense and timely hitting, today was an exemplary performance of both. Caroline pitched a terrific game and got a lot of support from her catcher and defense."
Kristen McPeek led the Black Knights with two RBIs and added two hits. Ashley Yoo also recorded an RBI, while Mae Wadyka and Alee Rashenskas had two hits apiece. Caroline Smith pitched all seven innings for the Cadets to earn her first win in the circle this season and held the Seahawks scoreless until the seventh inning.
Â
The Black Knights started the game off strong when McPeek had a one-run single through the right side. Wadyka was able to put Army ahead 1-0 at the top of the first.
Â
At the top of the third, McPeek had another RBI when she singled a hit up the middle and Kasey McCravey was able to find home putting Army up 2-0.
Â
The Black Knights went up 3-0 at the top of the fifth when Yoo singled through the left side allowing Rashenskas to score. UNC Wilmington scored their lone run of the game with a hit up the middle at bottom of the seventh. Smith earned a ground out to close out the game and clinch the win for Army.
Â
The Cadets improve to 1-4 on the season and are back in action Thursday, Feb. 18, when the team faces UC Riverside in California.
"We're looking forward to the next few practices and continuing some work on dirt and in all the elements," DePolo added. "This weekend coming up is going to be very exciting but filled with formidable opponents, so we plan to be ready."
