Women’s Tennis Splits Saturday Matches

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's tennis team won one match and lost another on Saturday. The Black Knights fell to Massachusetts to open the day 6-1 before topping Vassar 7-0 in the afternoon. They move to 5-2 overall this year, the Minutemen are 3-3, and the Brewers fall to 0-1.
Army challenged UMass in the loss, taking five of the singles matches into a third set. Rugile Valuniate won the first set against Ana Yrazusta 6-3 but then fell 6-3, 6-4. Eva Sung, in her second match of the year, lost 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to Ruth Crawford in the second singles position.
Bridget Guenard fought back for the Cadets only singles win versus the Minutemen. The sophomore rallied to win 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
Massachusetts won two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Carolyn Pitman and Kirby Einck teamed for a 7-6 (6-4) conquest in the third doubles spot. Pitman and Einck are now 3-0 this season when paired together.
The Black Knights had an easier outing in the afternoon against Vassar. They lost just one set across the nine matches. Guenard added another victory to increase her current winning streak to four in a row in singles play.
Nancy Porter and Kirby Einck won in the second doubles slot as both moved to 6-1 on the year in doubles. Paired together the duo is 3-0 this season.
Army has another three-game slate next weekend as they welcome Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday, Feb. 19, and then host Hartford and Rutgers on Saturday, Feb. 20.
