Softball Drops 5-3 Decision to the Seahawks

WILMINGTON, N.C. – The Army West Point softball team dropped a 5-3 decision to UNC Wilmington Saturday afternoon at the Seahawk Softball Bash. The Black Knights took an early lead, but a three-run fourth inning by the Seahawks secured the victory.

Nena Riccoboni had another standout game for Army with an RBI on one hit and recorded a team-high seven putouts. Alee Rashenskas recorded a season-high five putouts and had six assists. The second basemen had the team's only double of the game and three hits. Kasey McCravey had two hits, while Emily Gray, Gladys Esparza-Gallegos and Rashenskas each tallied a run.

Army had the first at bat, but the Seahawks were able to get three quick outs. UNC Wilmington was able to convert a score in the bottom of the first with a one-run single up the middle.

At the top of the second, Rashenskas stroked a double and advanced on a fielding error. The error advanced Esparza-Gallegos to home. Then, in the same inning, Riccoboni's sacrifice bunt delivered Rashenskas home to give the Black Knights a 2-1 lead.Â
The teams were scoreless in the third, but a fielder's choice score and a two-run homerun by UNC Wilmington boosted them to a 4-2 lead.

The Seahawks tacked on another score at the bottom of the sixth and then in the seventh, Army scored on a passed ball. UNC Wilmington was able to get the third out on the next play to end the game.

Army falls to 0-3 on the season. The Black Knights will be back in action when they take on Saint Francis at 4:00 p.m.
