ANNAPOLIS, Md. –  Host Navy claimed the top five spots en route to defeating the Army West Point men's cross country team, 15-46, at the US Naval Academy Golf Course Saturday morning in the annual Star Meet as part of the Star Series presented by USAA.
Navy's Lucas Stalnaker and Ryan McCoy were the lone runners to finish under 24 minutes as they claimed the top two spots in 23:39.39 and 23:56.73, respective.
Army senior Matt Bearden and freshman Robbie Santoyo set the pace for the Black Knight posting a time of 24:20.29 and 24:28.98 to place sixth and seventh overall.
ARMY'S TOP FINISHES
Matt Bearden – Sixth (24:20.29)
Robbie Santoyo – Seventh (24:28.98)
Johnny Valeri –13th (24:52.40)
Keegan Smith –14th (124:52.93)
Nick Causey –15th (24:55.94)
COACH'S COMMENT:
"We competed well but were beaten by a better team," said Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Mike Smith. "The score doesn't show it because we could not break into their top five, but we are closing the gap and doing it with young guys that are talented and determined.
"The process of building our team is a marathon not a sprint; we just need to keep focused on getting better and eventually we will turn the corner."
UP NEXT:
Army heads to Easton, Pa., for the Patriot League Championships, which are being hosted by Lafayette on Oct. 29.
