Loyola Chicago Edges Women’s Soccer
September 06, 2015 | Women's Soccer
CHICAGO – Taylor Lambouris' goal midway through the first half proved to be the difference for Loyola Chicago as the Ramblers knocked off the Army West Point women's soccer team 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at Loyola Soccer Park.
Army(2-4-0) had multiple opportunities in first 20 minutes of the match, highlighted by a pair of shots on goal by sophomore Clare Shea. Loyola Chicago's goalkeeper Maddie Ford was up to the task and kept the match scoreless with two saves.
The home side seized control in the 22nd minute when Lambouris scored an unassisted goal. Lamboruis fired a curling shot from 25 yards out that snuck inside the near post past a diving Kimberly Comstock. The goal came at 21:43 and was Lambouris' first of the season.
Five minutes after Loyola Chicago went in front, Army earned a corner kick. Hanna Rozzi's service into the box reached Katie Holder, but her header sailed over the bar and the Ramblers' lead held at 1-0.
Despite having a 6-3 advantage in shots in the opening 45 minutes, the Black Knights went into intermission trailing by one goal.
Comstock spilt time in net with Jordan Cassalia, who began the second half in goal for Army. Looking for an equalizer, Army substitute Brigid Tracy put a shot on frame less than 10 minutes into the second period, but it was turned aside by Ford.
An hour into the match, Loyola Chicago had two chances to double its lead. Jenna Szczesny had two shots in a 90-second span, but Cassalia stopped both as the score remained 1-0.
Rozzi had a free kick float over the crossbar in the 65th minute and later in the 84th minute Shea had a shot blocked between a pair of Army corner kicks. The Black Knights finished with a 9-6 edge in shots and took five corners, compared to Loyola Chicago's four.
Army's three-game road trip concludes on Friday evening when the team travels to Storrs, Conn., to play Connecticut at 7 p.m.
Game Notes: The Black Knights used the same starting lineup in the first five games of the season … Sunday's match was the first meeting all-time between the two programs … Cassalia finished the day with two saves.
