Hofstra Gets Past Men’s Soccer, 1-0
September 04, 2015 | Men's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's soccer team fell to Hofstra by a score of 1-0 in its home opener on Friday afternoon at Clinton Field. The Black Knights slip to 0-3 on the year, while the Pride, which is receiving votes in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national poll, improve to 3-0.
"We had some really good moments and we got some good chances," said head coach Russell Payne. "Hofstra made the most of their chances and we give full credit to them. Right now, being goal-dangerous is something we have to continue to focus on and be better with. We had enough chances to score goals, but we didn't do so."
Army created the majority of the first half's offensive chances, as it owned a 6-2 advantage in shots at halftime.
Junior Christian Clark was involved in one of the Black Knights' first attempts, as he had a run into the 18-yard box before sending a shot at a tough angle toward net that was blocked away by a Hofstra defender in the 18th minute.
Army kept possession in Hofstra's end of the field and sophomore Marcos Arroyo sent a shot from straight on over the crossbar following a corner kick from the right side by senior Tommy Jaeger in the 22nd minute.
The Black Knights came up with their most-threatening scoring opportunity of the first half less than a minute later on a free kick off the foot of junior Tanner Vosvick. Vosvick's set piece was on target and was punched away by Hofstra goalkeeper Patric Pray before deflecting off an Army player and ricocheting off the crossbar. The Pride eventually cleared away the danger to keep the score level at 0-0.
The hosts continued to hold a slight advantage in offensive chances, but struggled early in the second half to get shots on net. Hofstra took control offensively for a brief time around the midway point of the period, beginning with header from Marius Flateboe off a corner kick that he wasn't able to direct on net, sending the shot wide of the left post.
The Pride broke the scoreless deadlock in the 71st minute when Joseph Holland received a left-swinging cross from Meshack Eshun Addy before beating Army goalkeeper Chris Britt on his short side at the left post.
Army kept play in Hofstra's end for most of the remainder of the contest and came up with a dangerous shot in the 82nd minute when senior Cody Guerry found a path through the visiting defense and sent a low shot on goal that was swallowed up by Pray.
Army is back in action on Monday, when it hosts Sacred Heart at 6 p.m. at Clinton Field.
MATCH NOTES: Army drops to 1-2-0 all-time versus Hofstra … senior Chris Britt started his third game in goal and finished without a save.
