BOSTON – The Army West Point men's cross country team competed in the Coast-to-Coast Battle in Beantown finishing 15th out of 21 teams Friday afternoon.
The Black Knights were led by junior Matt Bearden, who was the race's 72nd fastest finisher at a time of 25:18.3. Fellow junior Jacob Fong was the No. 2 for Army, finishing 81st in the field of 189 runners with a time of 25:23.8, while freshman Zach Brehm came in 99th with a time of 25:38.5.
"I thought our men did a pretty good job of executing today," said director of track and field and cross country Mike Smith. "We had some nice improvements across the board and some really nice runs from our young guys. I though Zach Brehm was exceptional today. It is difficult for a freshman to have a significant impact in men's cross country at any school and even more so at our institution. I thought Matt Bearden and Jacob Fong really did a nice job of moving u through the race and distributing their effort."
Brown Bailey was the fourth member of the Black Knights to cross the finish line, doing so at 25:48.5 placing him in 112th overall. The team's top-five was capped by sophomore Johnny Valeri who finished right behind Bailey in 113th place with a time of 25:50.1.
"We will build from this race and get the guys ready for the next challenge," said Smith. "That involves sticking to the process of working hard and smart."
Syracuse came away with the team win, placing runners in the one, three, four, seven and ten spots. Dartmouth came in second as a team, followed by Purdue, Cornell and Georgia.
