Volleyball Routs Stony Brook
September 19, 2015 | Volleyball
STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team closed out the Sea Wolves Invitational with two wins Saturday. The Black Knights swept Ivy League foe Columbia, 3-0, then turned around to defeated tournament host Stony Brook, 3-1.
"It was great to finish the tournament season on a high," said head coach Alma Kovaci. "The match against Stony Brook was tough. We didn't have much time between matches, but I thought the team did well to get the win. We are improving as a team and that is great to see. Amber and our pin attackers have become more productive, while our middle stays strong. It is nice to become more of a complete team, it is crucial."
Vanessa Edwards earned 50 assists in today's victory and 12 digs. Vanessa Wesley led the Black Knights with 15 kills, a career-high. Nicole Perri and Amber Clay both tallied 12 kills in the win, while Shannel Chong added 17 digs.
The Black Knights won the first set 26-14, but the Sea Wolves fought back in the second set to win 25-22. Army then won two straight sets to clinch the match.
With the score tied 6-6 in the third set, the Black Knights went on a 5-2 scoring spree to take a 11-8 lead. Stony Brook chipped away at the lead and brought the score within one at 11-10 in favor of the Black Knights. Army then scored four straight to take a 15-10 lead. Later in the set, the Cadets scored three straight to win 25-18.
In set four, the Sea Wolves jumped out to a 7-3 lead, but the Black Knights fought back to take a 10-7 lead. Amber Clay was on the serve for six of the seven points where Carolyn Bockrath and Nicole Perri registered multiple kills. Army continued to lead for the rest of the set. The Black Knights won the match, 25-22, on a kill by Victoria Reyer.
"It is a very long season and having all players productive on the court, even those off the bench is crucial to our success,' added Kovaci. "We will continue to improve, but we are ready to begin Patriot League contests Tuesday."
Army improves to 8-5 on the season with today's victories. Edwards paced the Black Knights' offense totaling 94 assists and 22 digs in today's contests.
The Black Knights are back in action at Gillis Field House Tuesday, Sept. 22 when they host Holy Cross in its first Patriot League contest of the season.
