September 11, 2015 | Women's Soccer
STORRS, Conn. – The 20th ranked Connecticut Huskies scored once in the first half and added a pair of late scores en route to a 3-0 victory over the Army West Point women's soccer team on Friday evening at Morrone Stadium.
UConn secured its sixth consecutive victory to remain perfect at 6-0-0, while Army fell to 2-5-0 on the year.
Each team had multiple chances in the opening stages of the match, with a pair of corners won on each end. Sophomore Clare Shea had a shot miss high in the sixth minute, prior to Jordan Cassalia's save on a chance from Annie Wickett a minute later.
At the 15-minute mark of the first half, a breakaway for UConn's leading scorer Rachel Hill led to the game's first goal. One-on-one with Cassalia, Hill knocked the ball around Cassalia and made no mistake with the opportunity by sliding a left-footed shot into the open Army goal.
Moments after UConn's tally, Shea had a shot go wide and then, in the 33rd minute, she forced Huskies' goalkeeper Emily Armstrong to make a save on another attempt.
Army went into the halftime break facing a 1-0 deficit after Cassalia added two saves to her total. At the conclusion of the half, the visitors had a 5-2 edge in corner kicks, but UConn held a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.
UConn forward Andrea Plucenik began to assert herself offensively in the start of the second half as she had a chance thwarted by Cassalia early in the period. Plucenik then set up consecutive chances for Liana Hinds, but both were turned away by Cassalia to keep the score at 1-0.
A corner kick taken by Hanna Rozzi in the 63rd minute was cleared away by the Huskies' back line.
Looking for a second goal, Hill had a left-footed blast tipped wide by a diving Cassalia in the 77th minute. The ensuing corner went without trouble and the Black Knights remained in striking distance.
The Huskies broke through with an insurance goal as Hinds doubled the advantage for the home side. Kim Urbanek was credited with the assist on the play, which was recorded at 79:23.
Minutes later, a loose ball in the Army penalty area fell to Tanya Altrui, who tapped it into the goal to complete the scoring.
Cassalia ended up with seven saves, which equaled her season high. Armstrong had one save in her second clean sheet of the year for UConn.
