SPRINGFIELD, N.J. – Rising cow Peter Kim was named the 113th Metropolitan Amateur champion after going 1 up over Seton Hall's Ryan Snouffer in the 36-hole final at the Baltusrol Golf Club's Upper Course on Sunday.
"Going into this tournament I had little expectations for myself," said Kim. "I had minimal time to prepare after my summer training, but I wanted to see where my game was and to see what my strengths and weaknesses were before the fall season started. To come this far and to more-or-less win the whole tournament, I can't even describe the joy that I'm feeling right now."
Kim qualified for match play after shooting a 75-71—146 (+4) and winning in a playoff. He then defeated Luke Feehan, 6 and 5, in the round of 16, Kyle Brey, 6 and 5, in the quarterfinals and Joseph Saladino, 1 up, in the semifinal.
At the break of the final, Kim led Snouffer 2 up. After much back-and-forth action on the last 18, Kim went 1 up and clinched the match on the last hole to become the 113th champion.
"A lot of things were running through my head," Kim said. "It was very back and forth where he made some great putts and then I would make some great putts. There were points where I made mistakes that he took advantage of and then he made mistakes that I took advantage of. It was a real battle out there, Snouffer is a phenomenal player, so to be able to come out on top was quite an honor."
Although this is Kim's first Amateur win, he is no stranger to winning Metropolitan Golf Association tournaments. In high school, Kim was the MGA Boy's champion back in 2008.
"For Peter to come out of five weeks of summer training and compete the way he did is awesome," said head coach Brian Watts. "It shows how much he has grown on and off the golf course. His expectations weren't too high as he only had a week or so to prepare. I believe this will be a huge step in his golfing career as he now knows that he doesn't have to be on the driving range every day to compete and win against some of the best amateurs in the country. He is excited about the upcoming year and I expect great things to continue from Peter as long as his mind and heart are in the right place."
The Black Knights first tee-off will be at the Doc Gimmler, an invitational hosted by St. John's at the Bethpage State Course, Red, from Sept. 12-13 in Queens, N.Y.
