Volleyball Drops 3-1 Decision to Arkansas
August 29, 2015 | Volleyball
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – After coming out strong and winning the first set, the Army West Point volleyball team dropped a 3-1 decision to Arkansas in day two of the Arkansas Invitational Saturday by set scores of 25-27, 25-21, 25-16 and 25-17.
"I was proud of our fight today," said head coach Alma Kovaci. "We may have lost, but we played much better than last night. When our serve and pass were both on we were unstoppable. Our goal is to get better every time we step onto the court and I feel like we did that in this game. It was great to see some new players make the lineup. Arkansas is a very good athletic and experienced team. The tournament part of our season is a process so we have to shift our focus to McNeese."
Carolyn Bockrath (12), Jaden Pickell (12) and Vanessa Wesley (10) were all in double-digits with kills in today's match. Bockrath also chipped in defensively with five blocks and three digs. Vanessa Edwards produced 38 assists throughout the four sets and Shanell Chong tallied 18 digs.
In the first set, the Razorbacks (2-0) came out to a 3-0 lead before the Black Knights got on the board with a kill from Olivia Fairfield from Edwards. Army earned its second point when Bockrath and Fairfield joined together to block two attack attempts by the Razorbacks to make the score 6-3.
Army earned nine-straight points with Pickell on the serve to earn its first lead of the match at 12-7. During the span, Pickell had two service aces.
Even after two Arkansas timeouts, the Black Knights never relinquished their lead. The Razorbacks fought back tying the match at 21-21, 22-22, 23-23 and 25-25 before the Black Knights won the match, 27-25, off a block by Bockrath and Pickell.
The Razorbacks would come back to win the next three back-and-forth sets and ultimately win the match. On the opposite side of the net, Victoria Pilar earned a double-double with 24 kills and 11 digs.
The Black Knights (0-2) will face the Cowgirls for the first time in program history tonight at 5:30 p.m. (ET) in the final match of the tournament. McNeese State (0-2) finished the 2014 season with a record of 15-17 overall and 5-11 in the Southland Conference. The Cowgirls return Amber Fryer and Malina Sanchez who led the team in kills with 259 and 232, respectively. Kelly Graham also returns to fuel the offense after averaging 9.25 assists per set during her junior campaign.
