WEST POINT, N.Y. - Navy scored single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings and Stephen Moore threw a complete-game shutout to send the Mids to a 3-0 victory over the Army baseball team in game one of Sunday's twinbill at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field.
The loss dropped Army West Point to 19-23 on the year and 5-14 in the Patriot League, while Navy improved to 13-6 in the conference and 32-16 overall. The Navy victory guaranteed a series victory after it took both contests on Saturday.
Moore limited the Black Knights to five base hits and the right-hander struck out three and walked two. He improved to 5-2 for the season.
Neither side pushed a run across through the first two innings as Army West Point starter Jeremy Mortensen struck out two Navy hitters. Moore kept the Black Knights off the board despite hits by Ben Smith and Brandon Lee in each frame.
The visitors plated a run on a throwing error and a wild pitch to take the lead in the top of the third inning prior to Moore sending the Black Knights down in order in the home half.
Navy added to its lead in the top of the fourth after Connor Deneen laced a one-out double to the gap in left center. Two batters later with Deneen at second and two gone, Ben McGrath singled to center and Deneen beat the relay throw with a slide into home plate that made it a 2-0 lead for the visitors.
Moore faced the minimum in the third despite a leadoff single by Mark McCants prior to being erased on a double play. Moore's second strikeout ended the inning as the deficit remained two through four.
A leadoff single to start the fifth by Travis Blue, followed by a stolen base and a flyout that advanced him to third put Navy in business with one out. Brad Borosak came to the plate and lifted a fly ball to left field that was deep enough to score Blue and increase the lead to 3-0.
Ryan Levenhagen worked a leadoff walk in the last of the fifth, but Moore got out of the inning with three flyouts despite a pair of errors behind him.
Army West Point threatened after an error by Borosak with runners on the corners and one out, but Borosak redeemed himself when Jon Rosoff was retired on a 4-6-3 double play to end the game.
Mortensen fell to 2-5 despite holding Navy to three runs, two of them earned, with five strikeouts and one walk in his first-career complete game effort.
Game Notes: Army West Point wore its home white jerseys with black pinstripes, white pants and black caps ... Ryan Levenhagen reached base three times with two walks and a single in the seventh.
