Men's Tennis Sweeps Navy in Star Match

WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Army men's tennis team posted a 4-0 victory over Navy on Saturday afternoon at Malek Tennis Courts to mark its third consecutive Star victory over the Midshipmen. The Black Knights finish the regular season 16-8 overall and 7-0 in the Patriot League, while the Mids fall to 17-10 and 3-1.
Army will be the top seed it next week's Patriot League Tournament after edging out Navy for the best record in the conference. The victory marks Army's 20th straight against Patriot League opponents in the regular season, dating back to March 22, 2013.
"This was a great match for us," said 13th-year head coach Jim Poling, who improves to 8-5 in Star matches. "I thought we played very well and I'm really proud of our guys."
The Black Knights earned the doubles point after their No. 2 and No. 3 pairings defeated their counterparts from Navy. Junior Harrison McCormick and sophomore Grant Riechmann combined for an 8-5 victory over Navy's Blake Daniel and Calvin Mark at No. 2 doubles and junior Austin McCasin and sophomore Kyle Barnes secured an 8-6 decision in the No. 3 doubles contest.
Army won the three odd-numbered singles competitions, while the other three went unfinished. Sophomore Sam Lampman (No. 1), Riechmann (No. 3) and McCormick (No. 5) notched victories for the Black Knights, with Riechmann and McCormick both winning in two sets.
Lampman bested Mark, 7-6, 7-3, 6-4 at the No. 1 singles position, while Riechmann and McCormick earned 6-4, 6-3 and 6-3, 6-3 victories at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively.
Army will begin competition in the Patriot League Tournament next week on the campus of Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pa. As the No. 1 seed in the nine-team field, the Black Knights earn a bye for the tournament's first round and will begin play in the quarterfinal round on Friday, April 17.
