October 07, 2015 | Women's Soccer
PRINCETON, N.J. - Bailey Widman scored early, but Princeton responded with four goals to knock off the Army West Point women's soccer team on Wednesday night at Roberts Stadium.
Army (4-8-1) quickly secured the lead with a goal in the sixth minute. Sophomore Clare Shea controlled the ball in the corner for the visiting Black Knights before sending a short pass to senior Katie Holder. Holder turned and let loose a low cross toward Widman, who held her position nicely in front of the penalty spot. Widman turned toward goal and ripped a low right-footed blast between the legs of Princeton goalkeeper Noelani Kong-Johnson.
Princeton's Sarah Mendenhall drew a free kick on the edge of the Army penalty area in the 23rd minute and the Tigers (8-4-0) took advantage of the opportunity. Emily Sura stepped up to the ball, located to the right of the post and outside the box, and unleashed a bending, left-footed shot into the upper far corner that deflected off the fingertips of a diving Jordan Cassalia. The marker tied the match at a goal apiece.
A moment after Candace Stewart had an opportunity in front of Princeton's goal, the Tigers went in front with a beautiful volley by Samantha McDonough. Mikaela Symanovich sent a cross through the air toward the far post where McDonough sprinted and redirected the ball out of the air in stride into the far side netting. Princeton took the 2-1 lead into halftime.
Five minutes into the second half, Widman nearly leveled the score with a run that resulted with a left-footed shot from the top of the penalty area. The low strike was swallowed up by Kong-Johnson to keep the Tigers' lead at one goal.
Princeton nearly added to its lead in the 60th minute when Mimi Asom freed herself inside the Army 18-yard box, but her shot made sailed high and wide of the frame behind Cassalia.
A throw-in with close to 27 minutes to play led to Princeton finding a third goal. Vanessa Gregoire ran onto a bouncing ball and chipped a shot from 20-yards out over Cassalia to increase the lead to 3-1.
Another toss from the sideline provided Princeton with a quality scoring chance and Asom delivered for the Tigers. Asom controlled the throw-in with her back to goal, turned and sent a shot into the top corner. The score ran the final total to 4-1.
Princeton had a 14-8 lead in shots, and held a 6-2 lead in corner kicks. Kong-Johnson finished her night with four saves.
