Wesley Sets Record in Volleyball's Sweep of Loyola

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team swept Loyola, 3-0, Friday evening at Gillis Field House. The Black Knights extended its winning streak to eight in a row and improved its season record to 18-6 and Patriot League mark to 10-1.
"We are very proud of the team to be able to finish the game 3-0," said head coach Alma Kovaci. "I thought we served tougher today and that our passing improved. Vanessa ran a really good offense for us. It is really good to see our pins Olivia and Amber working well. We are very excited for senior day tomorrow when we face a powerful and experienced American team. We will focus on our side of the court and will control our serve and pass game along with playing tough defense."
Vanessa Wesley led the offense with 11 kills on 12 attempts with zero errors. She recorded a hitting percentage of .917 to set a new school record in the category of hitting percentage during a single match. The previous record was set by Stacy Gervelis in 1998 (.857).
Nicole Perri tallied 10 kills and added two service aces. Amber Clay recorded nine kills, while Carolyn Bockrath added six. Olivia Fairfield (4 k) and Jaden Pickell (3 k) also contributed to the Black Knights' offense.
Vanessa Edwards had 37 assists along with a kill and two block assists, while Shannel Chong added 10 digs and a kill. Perri and Bockrath recorded four block assists and Wesley tallied three.
Loyola called a timeout when Army led 14-10 in set one. Clay tallied a service ace before Bockrath earned a kill. Clay recorded a kill and then back-to-back blocks by the Black Knights caused the Greyhounds to call another timeout. Bockrath had two block assists with help from Edwards and Perri.
Perri earned two kills then one from Wesley gave the Cadets a 22-11 advantage. Loyola tallied three-straight points, but Perri and Wesley earned another block to give Army a 23-13 lead.
Edwards was on the serve for the last two points of the match when the Greyhounds had a ball handling error and a reception error to give the Black Knights set one 25-13.
In set two, Army claimed a 19-9 lead before Loyola fought back to bring the set within three at 21-18. The Black Knights never gave up their lead, but had a scare when the Greyhounds went on a 10-2 run to get back into the set.
However, Army earned a point off a kill by Bockrath and a ball handling error and attacking error by Loyola to get help the Cadets clinch the set 25-20.
Loyola jumped out to lead in the third set, but the Black Knights went on a 6-2 run to tie the set at 9-all. The Greyhounds and Black Knights were tied at 15-all, but three-straight points by Army caused Loyola to call timeout.
Army broke away with a 10-2 run to clinch the match with a third set score of 25-17. Pickell and Perri tallied kills to close out the match for the Black Knights.
Overall, Army held a 46-26 advantage in kills over Loyola and had a 7-4 edge in blocks. The Black Knights also led in the assists (41-24) and digs (38-23) category over the Greyhounds.
The Cadets will be back at Gillis Field House on Saturday Oct. 31 for senior night. Army hosts American at 5 p.m. for its final home match of the year.
