Colgate Tops Men’s Soccer in Rain-Delayed Match

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's soccer team fell to a 2-1 decision against Colgate on in a Patriot League match that featured wet field conditions on Wednesday evening at Clinton Field.
Army slips to 4-6-4 overall and 2-2-2 in the league after the setback, while Colgate improves to 8-6-2 and 5-2-0.
The Black Knights have eight points in the conference and currently stand in a three-way tie with Bucknell and Holy Cross for the sixth and final postseason position. Army has three Patriot League contests remaining after Wednesday. The Raiders build their point total to 15 and sit second in the conference behind first-place Boston University (16).
Army senior goalkeeper Chris Britt, who finished with two saves in the match, came up with his first stop of the game with a save on a shot by Colgate's Jared Stroud in the 14th minute. Britt made his second save 7:12 later when he denied a chance from Ethan Kutler in the 23rd minute to keep the game level at 0-0.
Freshman Brett Becia registered the first of 10 shots for the Black Knights on the evening, with a strike from outside the 18-yard box that was blocked away by a visiting defender in the 25th minute.
Colgate's Ricky Brown made a save on Army freshman Christian Lue Young in the 39th minute after Lue Young came off the bench in the 32nd minute for the hosts. Brown finished the contest with three saves.
Colgate was awarded six corner kicks in the opening half, but Army's defense prevented the Raiders from turning any one of those opportunities into a shot.
The Black Knights grabbed a 1-0 lead not long into the second half, as sophomore Okheem Riley found the back of the net on an assist from senior Cody Guerry in the 52nd minute. Guerry crossed the ball into the 18-yard box from the left side of the field to set up Riley, who beat Brown at the right post for his first career goal.
Army kept its pressure on with shots from senior Tommy Jaeger and sophomore Shaban Abousaud in the 55th and 56th minutes, respectively, before Riley fired an attempt that went wide of the net in the 60th minute.
The Raiders answered with an equalizing goal from Ethan Kutler in the 69th minute after Kutler received a flick-on header from Tyler Forbes and found the back of the net for his Patriot League-leading eighth goal of the season.
Colgate moved in front 4:12 later when Kutler fed a corner kick from the left corner flag in to Karl Brown, who headed home the pass to put his team up 2-1 in the 74th minute.
Army had two more shots in the remainder of the match, as junior Nick Williams had his shot saved by Brown in the 77th minute and Guerry sent a chance wide of the target in the 87th minute.
The Black Knights return to the pitch for their final home match of the 2015 regular season on Saturday when they host Boston University at 4 p.m. Army will honor its six seniors in a Senior Day ceremony prior to the game.
