Postgame Quotes | Wake Forest 24, Army 21
September 20, 2014 | Football
Army head coach Jeff Monken
(Ref: On Army's first half...)
"I don't know if we really saw anything we could exploit. We just tried to block them and make some plays...At times we did [run well in the first half]. We only had 14 points; we didn't turn it into enough points. We had to punt in the first half, it's not like we scored every time we had it. If you're going to be worth a darn, you better be able to score. You're not going to have many possessions when you're running the football. You've got to be able to make them count, and we didn't."
(Ref: On what changed in the second half...)
"They didn't do anything differently, we did. We didn't block them, we got penalties. About every drive in the second half got stopped by a penalty, except maybe one three-and-out. The rest, we had a penalty that set us back. It's just foolish - stupid penalties, jumping offsides, chop block. That was a heck of a time for us to do that. We just have to be smarter. You get a 15-yard penalty on your last drive, it kills you."
(Ref: On what Army can build on...)
"I don't know [if there were positives]. You miss assignments, you miss tackles, you miss blocks, snap the ball into the ground on the field goal at the end of the first half. You've got an onside that's wide open, knew it would be, can't execute it. What do you build on? We didn't do anything really that well."
Army running back Larry Dixon
(Ref: On the difference in the game...)
"I thought the guys played hard, but at the end of the game, hats off to Wake Forest. At the end at times they played better than we did and we just made too many mistakes to win. When you play a good team like that, you can't make mistakes like that. We need to come together as a team and really work on it and build towards next week."
(Ref: On the approach for the rest of the season...)
"We're going to go back, we're going to take good long look at the film, and correct ourselves and critique ourselves. We just need to get back to really working on the fundamentals. That's how we want to win, and that's what we pride ourselves on."
(Ref: On Wake Forest's performance...)
"Hats off to them. [They have] great athletes over there, they played extremely hard. They did the little things right, they did the little things better than we did and it showed."
Army defensive end Mike Ugenyi
(Ref: On how Army's defense did...)
"We had a lot of good plays from our linebackers, as well as our secondary and defensive line. We made a lot of mistakes in the first half, hence their 14 points, but we played really hard and played tough, but [made too many] mental errors."
(Ref: On what the team can build on...)
"We came together at the end as a defense. The offense played well, as well. We just have to make sure we finish games after this...We were prepared for everything we saw on the field. [We made too many] mental errors, missed assignments. We all rallied together when mistakes were made."
