Col. Joseph DeAntona
Deputy Military Athletic Director
Colonel Joseph P. DeAntona was born in Iowa City, Iowa, and grew up in Scranton, Pa. In 1984, he graduated from the United States Military Academy and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the Air Defense Artillery. He currently serves as the Military Deputy Athletic Director at the United States Military Academy. Most recently, DeAntona served as Brigade Tactical Officer for the United States Corps of Cadets at West Point.
DeAntona has had a variety of operational assignments during his twenty-nine years of military service. These include Platoon Leader, Executive Officer and Assistant Group S-3, 559th Artillery Group, Vicenza, Italy; Assistant S-3 and Battery Commander, 2nd BN, 7th ADA (PATRIOT), 11th ADA Brigade; S-3 and XO for 5th BN, 7th ADA (PATRIOT) 94th and 69th ADA Brigades, Germany; Theater Air and Missile Defense Branch Chief, Current Operations Division, J-3 Directorate, United States Central Command, MacDill Air Force Base, Florida; Battalion Commander for 2nd BN, 1st ADA (PATRIOT), 35th ADA Brigade; Personnel Proponent Officer, Office of the Chief of Air Defense Artillery; G3 and Chief of Staff, 32nd Army Air and Missile Defense Command; Commander of the 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade as well as Director, Department of the Army G8, Army Transformation Team-Texas. He served as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Behavioral Sciences and Leadership at USMA before taking over as the BTO.
DeAntona's operational deployments include Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia (B/2-7 ADA Commander); Operations Noble Safeguard/Flexible Resolve/Shining Presence, Israel (5-7 ADA Bn S3/XO); Operation Southern Watch/Desert Spring, Saudi Arabia/Kuwait (USCENTCOM J3 TAMD Branch Chief); Operation Iraqi Freedom, Kuwait (Task Force 2-1 ADA "Iron Fist" Commander) and Operation Enduring Freedom, Qatar, (11th ADA BDE Commander).
DeAntona's military education includes the Air Defense Officer Basic Course, Patriot Weapons Track, the Air Defense Officer Advanced Course, Combined Arms and Services Staff School, Command and General Staff College and the US College of Naval Command and Staff and the US Army War College. Additionally, he earned a B.S. degree from the US Military Academy, an M.S. degree from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, and M.A. degrees from both the US Naval War College and the US Army War College.
His awards include the Legion of Merit (1OLC), the Bronze Star Medal (1OLC), the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (1 Silver Oak Leaf and 1 OLC), the Joint Commendation Medal, Army Commendation Medal (2 OLC), the Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Army Achievement Medal (1OLC).
DeAntona is married to the former Lisa Lawson of St. Charles, Mo. The couple has two children, Bonnie Ann, a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and Joseph IV, and a grandson, Joseph V.
